Since I was in my teens, every weekend was centered around bars, clubs, ‘nights’, parties, after parties and dont get me wrong, there were some nights I enjoyed.
However, coming into the second half of my twenties, I found these weekends genuinely quite boring. I had literally done it all a thousand times before.
I found myself wracking my brains (or hoping), there must be something else?!
Now when I look back on my alcohol days, I realised it was actually the fear and lack of confidence that made me have ‘one too many’. I had NO confidence and I was fearful of EVERYTHING (including talking to people!).
It was after NYE 2016 I woke up and came to the realisation I had to change some things in my life and see where it led me. On December 31st 2016, the thought of giving up alcohol would have TERRIFIED me, but on 1st January 2017 everything suddenly changed (and for the better!!).
Other people’s comments
My first thing on the list because the comments I have received since removing alcohol actually have been quite shocking. People seem to treat it like its alien the fact you can be out and not drinking.
“How do you get your release?”
“Can we please just get drunk next time we see each other”
“How do you even have FUN?”
“It’s weird you’re in a bar and not drinking?”
“You’re out and drinking ‘H20’?”
These are just a small fraction of the comments I have had and I genuinely ask myself WHY!
Firstly, why do people think its ok to say these kind of comments and secondly why is it so strange to them?
A year and a half ago, I was SO concerned about what people would think of me, now I just shrug these comments off (and quite frankly stay away from those types of people).
My first thought when I decided to remove alcohol from my life was – but what will I do on the weekends? For so long my weekends had been centered around going out and partying. It took a few weeks to get used to it but WOW once I got out of that routine, it was life changing.
My weekends are now packed with firstly working on my two businesses, but also exploring! Exhibitions, museums, history, art, friends, family, photography, nutrition, music, dogs – every weekend I try and explore something different and learn something new and I LOVE IT!
On average, I would spend £60 a night out. In one year, there are around 53 Saturdays so for me that is around 80 Saturdays I have not drunk alcohol. You know how much money I just worked out I have saved?
I actually cant quite believe this…£4,800!! Genuinely shocked…
How can you go on a date and not drink alcohol- simple!
Me and my boyfriend started going out nearly a year ago and we start dating around February of last year (a month in!). In that time, we went on numerous dates and was it ever a problem? No! (Big shoutout to my numero uno – Joe Chapman!)
Let me be quite clear about this – if a guy I started seeing had a problem with me not drinking alcohol – then he is definitely not the right one and I would get rid ASAP!
Drink menus…argh the endless list of alcoholic beverages with a small sliver left for non-alcoholic drinks. Genuinely the only options available is water, coke or lemonade. I am now seeing new non-alcoholic drinks like Seed Lip popping up and it is SO refreshing to see – we need more!
I think this is actually the most important lesson I have learnt – to never be fearful to make a change and follow your dreams. The thought of owning my own business, let alone two businesses, would have PETRIFIED me a few years back. It was something I always wanted to do but I never had the guts to do it.
As soon as I removed alcohol, rather than be fearful, I am now fearless. I want to travel, explore, take food photos in different cultures, work in different countries, inspire others to make a change and LOVE what I do.
This is not an onslaught against alcohol. We all know health wise what alcohol can do to our bodies but this is more for people who want to make a change, are bored of boozy nights and just feel that alcohol brings them nothing but negativity.
So if you are that person, then I am here to help.
