ACNE plagued me throughout my teens and early twenties. I suffered with severe acne on my face, back, chest even sometimes on my scalp…There were days when I wouldn’t leave the house or I would develop a sudden lightening crack of dry skin (literally) on my cheeks from the latest oil eradicating medication I had been put on i.e. Roaccutane.
To make it worse, I always felt those crafty mirrors would creep up on me and I was left staring at a girl that felt lost, bewildered and had no idea where to turn for help with the condition of my skin. My friends and family used to say ‘it’s just spots’, ‘I don’t even notice them’. None of these comments made a difference, I just wanted a quick fix. I tried a number of strong medications (you name it, I’ve tried it), saw a handful of dermatologists, bought nearly every skincare range going and plastered my face in makeup (double wear to the rescue).
All with one aim in mind – a flawless complexion.
My obsession with skin led me to furthering my career in makeup after I graduated from Sussex University. I was accepted on a 6-month makeup artistry course. My intention being – finally I could master how to cover up my acne. It was during this time, I was exhausted from studying full time and working both days on the weekend as a beauty advisor, I was consuming junk food, fizzy drinks, not getting enough sleep, smoking, drinking excessive alcohol…the result? My skin exploded.
I decided to journey into the world of beauty PR for several years. It was during this time, I received thorough training on skin, cosmetic ingredients and I learnt the tips and tricks of the beauty industry. I met some of the most influential individuals, makeup artists, dermatologists, beauty entrepreneurs, cosmetic scientists and NUTRITIONISTS.
In 2015, I had a 10-minute conversation with a top Registered Nutritionist and it was this conversation that changed my life for good. She simply explained that diet and lifestyle had a massive impact on the functioning of the skin. Now I never necessarily ate a ‘bad’ diet but I was not eating optimally for its health. With the advice of a Registered Nutritionist, I began to experiment and change certain dietary habits and gradually my skin began to clear. Not only that…I lost unwanted weight that I had been carrying around since I was a teenager, I had more energy, my hair was shinier and I felt energetic, happy and focused.
This revelation led me to quitting my job and studying a MSc in Nutrition.
I am now a Registered Associate Nutritionist (ANutr) with the Association for Nutrition (AfN), specialising in you guessed it – skin nutrition. From using all the knowledge I have required since I ventured into the world of beauty and nutrition, I have decided to write a guide to help others like yourself.
I do not advocate any type of diet. I am not asking you to become vegan, vegetarian or a meat/fish – that is your decision and one for you to make. There is no right or wrong answer but I do ask one thing – to increase your consumption of plant-based foods.
